How to Select Rubber Lining for Slurry and Chemical Service

Posted on 2026-09-25
Choosing the right lining rubber starts with three questions: what is the medium, how abrasive is it, and how hot does it run?

For abrasive slurry with hard particles — mine tailings, concentrate, dredging sand — soft natural rubber is usually the starting point. Its high resilience lets it absorb particle impact instead of being torn away. Where temperature rises above about 80 °C, natural rubber ages faster, and butyl or EPDM grades become the practical choice.

For chemical service, the compound is matched to the specific chemical, concentration and temperature: butyl for acids and salt solutions, EPDM for hot water and many alkalis, neoprene where oil resistance is needed. Particle size and concentration shift the required thickness, commonly 3–6 mm.

A lining supplier worth working with will ask for the medium data sheet before quoting. Send us your medium, temperature and pipe size, and we will recommend a compound with expected service life.
